Today the kids and I visited a local farm called Grand View.
I found this place about a year ago when I started researching local sources of grass-fed beef.
Grand View Farm is a pasture-based farm that is focused on organically grown, local food. They supply grass-fed only cattle plus chicken, eggs, and pork, all of which live outdoors and feed off the land in a environmentally friendly manner.
My favorite part of the farm is their complete transparency. You are not only allowed but encouraged to walk around the farm and ask questions.
The kids get to see where their food comes from, and I think that’s important, especially in the pre-packaged, convenient culture we live in.
Up until today I only purchased chicken, eggs and pork from them as there was a waiting list for the beef. I added my name — oh, my, it must have been — about a year ago and totally forgot about it.
A few weeks ago I got an email that said my quarter cow would be ready to pick up in a couple of weeks. Well, today was pick-up day!
I didn’t really consider how much meat a quarter cow was or how it would come. I was excited to see a great variety of cuts and things I normally don’t buy. Besides the quality of the beef and the fact that it’s local and responsibly raised, this variety was another reason I put my name on the wait list. Now I’m challenged to cook all this. And I love a challenge!
I also love having more stock in the house. I’ve always been a pantry cook. Planning weekly meals and shopping on an as-needed basis doesn’t work for me. Instead, I stock and react. It feels like less work and allows me to stay more flexible.
This whole process is a first for me so it will be interesting to see how long it lasts and how I incorporate it into our meals. My plan is to stock up on some chicken and pork and then spend most of my time at farmers markets throughout the summer for fresh veggies. This will reduce my trips to the regular grocery store where I’m more tempted to buy snack items and junk, which I have been weeding out since the new year and my Whole30 experience.
The cool thing is this kids, well the 10-Year-Old at least, is on board! Tonight he said, “Can I have a bowl of cereal (I only buy mini-wheats) and a hard boiled egg? I’m hungry and we don’t have any snacks.”
“Sure. If you’re hungry. You noticed I’m buying less snacks now?” I said.
“I know,” he said. “I like it.”
I can honestly say I never expected that to come out of his mouth! He’s a typical kid who likes candy and doughnuts, of course, but I’m trying. We talk about food a lot and he helps in the kitchen although sometimes I need to make him.
Going to the farm today also gave us a chance to talk about how the animals are treated and how I’d like to support farmers who treat animals correctly.
We stopped the car on the way out of the farm to take a look at the cattle out in field.
They were all just chillin’ in the pasture and it made me smile.
